Carmen la de Triana – Falangist-‘Nazi’-Gypsy cinema
A couple of scenes and songs from the Spanish-German classic Gypsy romance film, Carmen la de Triana, a German-produced Spanish language remake of Herbert Maisch’s Andalusische Nächte, based on Bizet’s Carmen.
The production came out of a meeting between the star, Imperio Argentina, her husband, Florián Rey, the chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler, and one of the chancellor’s key advisors, Joseph Goebbels. Rey divorced Argentina (citing her alleged affair with Señor Hitler) and returned to Spain.
